The serendipitous combination of soft serve ice cream and flavored
ice — better known as gelati to millions of frozen dessert fans — has
farrived in grocery stores with the launch of Turkey Hill Dairy’s
Duetto. The product is available in four flavors and features vanilla
soft serve ice cream swirled with the Dairy’s signature cherry, lemon,
raspberry or mango Venice ice.
Duetto is the result of over a year of development as the recipe was
refined and tested to withstand the colder temperatures of grocery
store and at-home freezers — typically 10 degrees Fahrenheit or lower.
Until now, no major ice cream manufacturer has been able to distribute
a flavored ice and ice cream product like Duetto. That’s because
traditional gelati desserts, like those sold by vendors or specialty
shops, require the ice and soft serve ice cream to be stored separately
and at slightly warmer temperatures than traditional freezers.
Turkey Hill Ice Cream fans got a taste of Duetto when it was test
marketed as Cherry Gelati and released as a Limited Edition flavor for
three months in the fall of 2006. During that time, and in recent
sampling events, customer response to Duetto has been, according to
Frey, “overwhelmingly positive.” At the annual Pennsylvania Farm Show
in January, the Turkey Hill team distributed over 55,000 samples of
Duetto during the weeklong event.
